ENGINEERS HELPING WOMEN AFFECTED BY DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

GHD in Townsville is helping the North Queensland Women’s Legal Service provide free legal services to women in rural, regional and remote communities in North and Far North Queensland.

One of the world’s leading engineering, architecture, environmental and construction services companies, GHD, has generously donated five laptops to the North Queensland Women’s Legal Service to provide free legal advice – by Skype – for women living in Mackay, Kuranda, Mt Isa, Bowen and Cooktown.

North Queensland Women’s Legal Service Director Anne Lewis said “This means we can expand our outreach legal services. It will make access to vital legal help easier for women living in these communities”.  She continued “Last year, around 6,000 free legal services were provided to North Queensland women, with two thirds of those women being affected by family or domestic violence”.

Clint Spencer, GHD’s Townsville Manager said “We wanted to make a practical contribution that would support women affected by domestic violence and help them get the advice and support they need.”

Local community centres and women’s support services will ‘link’ the women in need with the North Queensland Women’s Legal Service lawyers – via Skype – using the donated laptops.

A free legal advice line also operates on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9am till 1pm – just call 1800 244 504. Or, to find out more, or to make a donation to North Queensland Women’s Legal Service, please visit their website at www.nqwls.com.au.
