Local Women ‘Lead the Way’

Local women ‘lead the way’
Calling for an end to violence and discrimination
North Queensland Women’s Legal Service (NQWLS) and Anti-Discrimination Commission Queensland (ADCQ) join forces to empower local women on International Women’s Day

1 March 2017, TOWNSVILLE:

On International Women’s Day (Wednesday 8 March 2017), NQWLS and ADCQ will host a FREE morning tea to inspire local women to ‘lead the way’ in calling for an end to violence and discrimination against women in Townsville.
Anne Franzmann, Regional Manager for the ADCQ, explains that the annual morning tea features food and fun, but said it is about empowering women to take a stand against discrimination and violence; whether that is by seeking legal advice, making a formal complaint, joining a support group, or helping other women in need.
Women who want to join the fun and attend the morning tea can simply call ADCQ on 4421 4000 to reserve their seat.
Sharell O’Brien, Supervising Solicitor at NQWLS, “With Townsville ranked in the top four (4) towns for the highest number of domestic violence protection order applications in Queensland and with police responding to 376 domestic violence matters per day, it is critically important that the whole community acts together to eliminate violence and discrimination against women.”
She added “Unfortunately, violence and discrimination are not the only challenges women face. Sexual abuse, family breakdown and disputes about children and property are also high on the list of issues for women who contact NQWLS for free legal help and support.”
“The morning tea will not only be about ensuring women know about the services available to them, but also about empowering them to help create change in their own communities.”
NQWLS provides free legal services to women living anywhere in NQ or FNQ. It provides more than 6,000 legal services each year and has seen a 60 per cent increase in the number of women calling its Legal Advice Line for help in the past year.
Any woman in need of free legal advice can contact NQWLS on 4772 5400 to make an appointment to see one of their solicitors, or call the legal advice line on 1800 244 504. More information online at www.nqwls.com.au.
