Welcome to North Queensland Women’s Legal Service (NQWLS) inaugural quarterly newsletter. We wish to extend our gratitude to members, supporters, clients and volunteers who support us to in our work – empowering women within the justice system.

Since the start of 2016, NQWLS has been fortunate to have 3 new solicitors join the team in both Cairns and Townsville. We welcome Danielle O’Connor, Rachael Ozanne-Pike and Jodie Woodward.

In January 2016, NQWLS attended the North Queensland Toyota Cowboys Community Day in Townsville. Our Tackle Domestic Violence campaign was very much on show to the community with our promotional pink t-shirts and wrist bands being the items of choice. T-shirts can be purchased for $20 at both our offices and wrist bands for $2.

Townsville staff also participated in a Connecting Community Expo in March, again highlighting the availability of FREE legal services for women and rallying up support.

NQWLS regularly participates in the Red Rose Rally Campaign. The rallies are organised to remember those women and children who have lost their lives due to Domestic Violence and to spotlight this very serious issue to the public and to authorities.

NQWLS partnered with ADCQ in both Cairns and Townsville to host a morning tea event in both cities for International Women’s Day 2016. Invitations were extended to local service providers, their clients and the wider community. The events were generously funded by the YWCA and Queensland Government, Department of Communities under the inaugural Queensland Women’s Week scheme.

A free morning tea was provided to guests, whilst they listened to inspirational women from their community speak on the theme of ‘Achieve, Acknowledge, Celebrate’.

NQWLS’ would like to thank all of the speakers for the stories they shared – a gift to the audience – from Madge Sceriha, Fiona Cochrane, Belesila Nakure, Julie Simon-Abbott, Fiona Jose and Kristy Valley (the Imperfect Mum blogger).

In addition, Townsville had La Luna Youth Theatre perform some circus acts as entertainment to kick off the morning, and closed the program with the girls from St Margaret Mary’s School choir.  In Cairns they had entertainment from St Monica’s College choir and finished off the morning with an energised Zumba demo, courtesy of Debbie Ball. It was wonderful to see everyone participate in the fun as well as the discussions.

The combined events saw near two hundred women attend, all of whom left the gathering feeling encouraged, uplifted and inspired.
